1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups cake flour -- sifted
1 cup milk
5 egg whites -- stiffly beaten

With a mixer beat 5 egg whites until they hold stiff peaks. Cream the shortening and sugar. Add the baking powder, salt, and vanilla. Mix well. Add the milk and flour and mix until smooth. Add the egg whites and fold in by hand. Do not overmix. Pour batter into a 13" X 9" 1/4 sheet cake pan or 2 9" pans that have been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.
